SILVER SPRING, MD – Today, the American Nurses Association (ANA) announced the public comment period for revisions to the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (the Code) to inform updates to this essential guide for the nursing profession.
ANA is dedicated to publishing and revising the Code every ten years to ensure it addresses current challenges and ethical dilemmas that nurses face as they provide quality care to diverse populations. In the past 10 years, rapid developments in health care have brought about an increasing array of ethical and professional questions for nurses to navigate.
This public comment period is open now and closes July 31.
“The revisions that are implemented will inform the next ten years of health care ethics for all nurses as well as their patients and communities,” said Liz Stokes, PhD, JD, RN, director for the ANA Center for Ethics & Human Rights. “The 2025 revisions have been meticulously developed over months by a diverse panel of experts to address evolving patient care needs and reflect ongoing ethical challenges within the nursing profession. This revised code promises not only to strengthen our ethical foundations but also to direct moral action in nurses of all specialties. We invite you to join us on this journey as we shape the foundation of nursing ethics for 2025 and beyond.”
The revision panel, made up of 49 experts, including six co-chairs, aims to update the Code to reflect current, foreseeable, and potential ethical issues and uphold the profession’s core values. This 2025 Code of Ethics for Nurses Revision Panel includes nurses and nurse ethicists from around the nation to offer perspectives from various practice settings, geographic locations, and differing levels of expertise. The panel analyzed and reflected upon the core values of the nursing profession, examining ethical concerns that nurses encounter including health disparities, the unequal treatment of people, racism and allyship, nurses’ relationship to the global society, safety in the workplace, advanced technologies and more.
The input of nurses is critical to ensuring the Code’s continued relevance and impact in promoting ethical nursing practice.
